From our initial call, Sophia & Parker had such a knowing vision for their Tops’l Farm wedding day. Located on Maine’s enchanting mid-coast, in the small town of Waldoboro, Tops’l Farm provides an elevated glamping experience comprised of gorgeously crafted A-frame cabins, cottages, a yurt, an event barn, and saunas. Whether your party wants a rustic, close to nature experience, or all the familiar comforts of home, Tops’l farm offers wonderful examples of both. Being a working farm in a state that values local agriculture means super fresh ingredients, and insanely tasty nutritious meals featuring Maine seafood and veggies.
In our early chats Sophia had mentioned wanting to lean into the natural beauty of the venue and surrounding area for her Tops’l Farm wedding day. The all inclusive model of the farm made this dream so attainable and streamlined. From the A-frames on the far end, to the cottages and ceremony location, Tops’l farm is super walkable, and provides a dynamic assortment of spaces within a fairly small footprint. From a welcome party lobster boil, (bibs and all), to late night laughs around the fire pit, this Tops’l Farm wedding felt like a celebration of Maine as much as it did Sophia & Parker’s connection. These two brought so much love and intention to crafting this day. They perhaps said it best while filling out my wedding questionnaire where they included the following detail…
“Overall, we hope to create a nourishing, grounding, and playful weekend to celebrate our wedding with our loved ones. The general aesthetic/style is a relaxed, elevated, enchanting, backyard-style wedding with midcoast Maine as the backdrop.
Our priority is crafting a weekend that feels welcoming, comfortable, low-key, and centered around gathering to share meals, laughs, and unforgettable memories. I’m seeing a lot of weddings these days that focus heavily on intricate details and decor everywhere you look. While I could easily dive into planning those elements, I’ve found it helpful to ask: If there wasn’t a single picture taken of the weekend, would this design detail still matter to me?
This perspective has guided us to focus less on creating a weekend tailored for content creation and more on embracing the beautiful existing details of the property, enhancing it minimally to save time, money, and energy. What’s most important to us is the act of gathering itself, the meals we’ll share, the people who will be present, and the natural landscape as the perfect backdrop to it all.”
There’s so much in this reflection that feels so aligned with my photographic philosophy and valuable to couples in the process of planning their day. Alongside the question Sophia & Parker proposed, asking what would be worthwhile from a design perspective if no images were taken, I often encourage couples to think about the photographs they imagine feeling meaningful in the coming decades. I hope these questions spark new ideas to explore as you think about the photography for your own celebration, and look through this lovely Tops’l Farm wedding weekend.
