Memories from Beck & Patrik’s Migis Lodge wedding day on serene Sebago Lake in southern Maine. While I’ve called Vermont home for many years now, I lived in coastal Maine in my late teens and early twenties and am always thrilled to make the drive several hours east, back to where some of my earliest memories of being a photographer began. Despite its proximity within the bounds of Northern New England, Maine has a vastly different rhythm and palette than Vermont. Defined by dreamy blues, muted greens, and a blaze of foliage (at least in the autumn), the piece of land that Migis Lodge occupies along the shores of Sebago Lake, is brimming with the beloved character the Pine Tree State is known for.
Just a few weeks before their wedding weekend at Migis Lodge, Becky, Patrik, and I met in Portland, Maine to get to know one another and make some portraits together around their neighborhood and favorite local haunts. This included Becky’s Diner and the Nickelodeon Theater. If you haven’t visited, Maine is a surprisingly large state. Especially by east coast standards. Migis Lodge is a mere 40 minutes down the road from Portland and while all the essentials can be found close to the venue, Portland has a world-class food scene, a thriving music and arts community, and is absolutely worth a stop on the way.
Beck & Patrik struck the perfect balance of intention and go with the flow when planning their Migis Lodge wedding. Letting Sebago Lake and the elevated shoreline dwellings speak for themselves, they focused on bringing their whimsigoth – meets – summer camp aesthetic to life with a morning roll call, hacky sack circle, followed by a ceremony boat entrance, and an evening defined by intimate candlelight. I could have photographed these tablescapes for hours. Various hues of purple and maroon candles interspersed with gorgeous florals by Bad Rabbit Flowers. Pushing the bounds of an already eclectic day, a 90s alt-rock cover band led the dance floor and even featured a mid-set fiddle battle.
All of these bold thematic choices felt seamless. Was there an underlying thread that joined this sweet sprawling day? Maybe. It’s more likely I think that simply leaning into whatever excites you, makes you laugh, feel nostalgic, etc. is worthwhile above all else. It often comes up on calls that beyond the legal requirements for a wedding, the day is yours and a blank slate of a party for you to design and curate in a way that feels good and true to your relationship. Whether that means engaging with tradition or forgetting it all together, Migis Lodge provides one of southern Maine’s best backdrops for your wedding weekend.
