Even as a resident of the state, I find Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom holds a certain level of mystery, magic, and nostalgia. Tucked among its rugged hills and pristine lakes, small towns spring up throughout the kingdom boasting an eclectic economy of restaurants, inns, and breweries. I welcome any excuse to visit this remote part of the state and was thrilled to receive an invitation to photograph Sarah & Justin’s Highland Lodge wedding in pastoral Greensboro, Vermont.
With breathtaking views overlooking Caspian Lake, the Highland Lodge sits on over one hundred acres with foliage, fields, and woods as far as the eye can see. The property is comprised of a main inn, featuring a wraparound porch, (I can imagine having the perfect weekend just sitting here with friends,) a dining area, and a series of charming auxiliary cabins all within a short walk from one another. Weddings are many things, but I’d put “a once in a lifetime reunion drawing together friends and family from all possible corners of your life” pretty high on the list. To facilitate this kind of gathering, having a space that allows for a range of activities and rest on a walkable property is paramount and exactly what I imagine when I think of a Highland Lodge wedding day.
As a documentary wedding photographer, couples often ask how I achieve the candid images they see on social media, online galleries, portfolios, etc. The answer is simple, and at times feels like some sort of cosmic joke. You need only throw a party in a beautiful place and invite all your favorite people. If those ingredients are already in place, the images just happen. Nothing more is required of you. Show up as yourself, be as present as you can, and your photographer becomes a trusted witness. If you value a pristine four-season landscape in one of the most unique corners of the state, Greensboro, Vermont is a strong choice. If the heart of your wedding weekend is community and time together, the Highland Lodge is a wonderful place to come together and celebrate.
