The great songwriter Adrianne Lenker has a lyric that details a place as “country of ice, rain, and wildflower.” While I cannot be certain, I’ve always imagined this line to reference the state of Vermont. Water, in each of its forms, is hyperpresent here, and I deeply believe that embracing this condition is the way to experience the Green Mountain State. Sierra & Nate did exactly this on their Bliss Ridge Farm wedding day in Moretown, VT.
Set back on 88 acres in Vermont’s stunning Mad River Valley, Bliss Ridge Farm offers panoramic views, an 1800s barn, and two luxury treehouses. Couples looking to plan their wedding day can expect all this in addition to a backdrop of fields and forested hills that impress regardless of season or weather. While I love the sun as much as anyone else (I even spend a portion of the year in Austin, TX, to escape the long winter grey), Vermont really shines in the rain. Summer often feels like a lush, dense jungle due to our high precipitation rate, and as long as your venue has a plan in place, rain on a wedding day is no issue from a photo perspective.
While most of my work covers weddings and engagements, I have at times been asked to photograph a surprise proposal. The energy and emotion in the moments just after someone proposes is absolutely wild. Before documenting Sierra & Nate’s wedding at Bliss Ridge, I imagined I’d only witness this phenomenon in the rare context of being a present witness for the newly engaged. These two completely subverted this belief and maintained a sense of ecstatic jubilance and deep presence throughout their Bliss Ridge Farm wedding day. Seeing Sierra & Nate in their element like this was transfixing and inspiring. It’s a feeling I hope to hold onto for years to come.
